HomeTree Care ResourcesArticle

One of the most persistent myths in tree care is that winter is a bad time to remove trees. In Pennsylvania, the opposite is often true. Winter is an excellent time for tree removal and offers several real advantages over summer work.

Winter Removal Is Safe and Often Preferable

Stone Ridge Landscaping removes trees in every month of the year, and winter work is some of our most efficient. Here is why:

  • Frozen or firm ground reduces equipment damage to your lawn. A bucket truck on soft summer soil leaves ruts; the same equipment on January frozen ground leaves far less impact.
  • Bare canopies on deciduous trees improve sight lines for the crew, making felling direction control easier and removal more precise.
  • Fewer scheduling conflicts — our winter schedule has more flexibility than summer. You are more likely to get your preferred date and possibly a faster start.
  • No active bird nesting — the April through August nesting season requires care around protected migratory birds. Winter work avoids this entirely.

Is It More Difficult in Cold Weather?

For the crew, cold weather adds management challenges — equipment needs warming and shorter daylight limits the workday. But these are operational issues, not safety or quality issues for your property. A professional crew is equipped and trained for year-round operations. Ice storms and active nor’easters obviously pause removal work. But in the typical Lehigh Valley winter — cold, clear, or lightly snowing — removal proceeds normally.

Species-Specific Winter Advantages

For several common Lehigh Valley species, dormant-season removal has specific advantages:

  • Oak: Removing in winter completely eliminates the oak wilt risk from fresh wounds during beetle season (April through October)
  • EAB-killed ash: Removing dead ash in winter, before spring beetle emergence, reduces the spread of remaining emerald ash borer populations
  • Any tree near structures: Bare canopy in winter makes it much easier to assess crown structure, identify structural defects, and precisely control removal sections

Pricing in Winter

Winter pricing at Stone Ridge Landscaping is consistent with our year-round rates. If you are looking to schedule during a potentially more flexible window, call us in January or February — we can often accommodate faster turnaround than peak season.
