Legitimate free tree removal in Pennsylvania is less common than online searches suggest, but it does happen in specific situations. Here is an honest breakdown of when you might actually get a tree removed at no cost in the Lehigh Valley — and when “free removal” offers are too good to be true.

When Free Removal Is Genuinely Possible

PPL Electric Utility Removal

PPL Electric Utilities removes trees that directly interfere with their transmission and distribution lines at no cost to the property owner. If a tree on your property is threatening a PPL power line, call 1-800-342-5775 and request a vegetation management assessment. PPL will determine if the tree qualifies for their program. Note that PPL manages pole-to-pole lines, not the service drop from the pole to your house — service-drop clearance is typically the homeowner’s responsibility.

Trading the Firewood

Some tree services will discount or waive removal costs for high-value hardwood trees: straight, large-diameter oak, black walnut, cherry, or hickory in accessible locations. The removed timber offsets their hauling and labor cost. This is most likely for large straight hardwoods on level, accessible ground during slower months. It does not apply to silver maple, ash, pine, or most ornamentals.

Municipal Right-of-Way Programs

Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and most Lehigh Valley municipalities will remove right-of-way trees that have been assessed as hazardous or diseased beyond recovery. If the tree in question is in the right-of-way and is genuinely hazardous, contact your city’s Public Works or Urban Forestry department for an assessment.

What Is Never Actually Free

Door-to-door offers for free or dramatically discounted removal — especially in the days following a storm — are almost always either scams or performed without proper insurance, with substandard practices, or with hidden fees added after work starts. If someone offers to take your tree for free “because they want the wood,” verify their insurance and get a written agreement before any work begins.

Quality professional tree removal in the Lehigh Valley costs $400 to $2,500 for most residential trees. If the price is dramatically outside that range with no verifiable explanation, ask why — and verify insurance regardless.
