After a major storm in the Lehigh Valley — a nor’easter, summer thunderstorm, or remnants of a tropical system — your trees may have damage ranging from cosmetic to catastrophic. Knowing the difference, and what to do about each type, prevents both unnecessary removals and dangerous delays on genuinely hazardous situations.

Types of Storm Damage and What They Mean

Broken or Hanging Limbs (“Widow-Makers”)

Hanging limbs are the most immediate danger after a storm. A branch that broke but is still held in the canopy can fall without warning — sometimes days after the storm when wind picks up again or supporting limbs shift. Never work or walk beneath a widow-maker. Call us immediately for these — they are the first priority in storm cleanup.

Split Leader or Co-Dominant Stems

When a tree has two main trunks (co-dominant stems, especially common in silver maple), storm loading often forces them apart. A partial split may still be holding, but the structural bond is compromised. These require immediate assessment. In some cases, cabling and bracing can save the tree; in others, removal is the safest answer.

Uprooted Trees

A fully uprooted tree with the root plate lifted is generally a complete loss — do not attempt to push it back. The structural root system is severed and the tree will not recover. If it has fallen on a structure, contact your insurance company and call us for emergency removal documentation.

Partially Uprooted or Leaning Trees

A tree with a new lean and a partially lifted root plate is an immediate hazard. Even standing, the remaining roots may not hold through the next wind event. These need professional assessment within 24 to 48 hours. Do not approach the base from the side where the root plate is lifting.

How Much Canopy Loss Can a Tree Survive?

A tree that lost 25% or less of its canopy will almost always recover. One that lost 50% or more has a marginal chance depending on species, age, and prior health. A tree that lost 75% or more should generally be removed. Stone Ridge can assess post-storm canopy loss and give you an honest prognosis.
